Foscam has updated their indoor tilt and pan camera model FI9821W with a V2. The upgrade includes a wider lens, updated software and increased processing power.

720P HD image Quality.

This very stable Wi-Fi, tilt and pan camera features 1280X720p HD image quality from the 1 mega pixel lens. The built in DVR enables the recording of the footage onto an SD card within the unit in a high compression H.264 format for maximising storage space. The SD card is not included and can only be up to a maximum of 32Gb.

The camera also has a number of IR LED’s which allows for fairly good night vision, claimed to be up to 26 feet. Night vision is capable and adequate, but just don’t expect cinematic.

The standard software provided to monitor and adjust the camera from your desktop is intuitive and relatively straight forward. That said, there are network and router settings required to allow access to this camera outside of the network, like on your mobile or work computer. These could be a bit tricky if you don’t have the skill, but the information is readily available for the novice to complete the task.

Connection.

Network connection is possible via either ethernet cable or Wi-Fi using the IEEE802.11b/g/n protocols. Nice to see that N is available to transfer up to 150Mbps of data onto the network for smooth video transfer. This bandwidth will limit image quality settings. If you do not have enough bandwidth to your network the image could drop out, so higher network speeds matter with surveillance cameras. For easy connection a WPS button is provided for one push wireless connection.

Alarm notifications.

Once set up the camera is able to send out alerts via e-mail and a snapshot of the cause for the alert.

The unit is able to be configured to alert you of motion within a defined location and record only when an alert has been triggered. The standard software provided to monitor and adjust the camera from your desktop is intuitive and relatively straight forward. Storage flexibility.

Phone app imageThis is a fully fledged IP camera that sits on your network. The standard software allows you to connect and monitor multiple cameras within the same window. As the camera is equipped with it’s own network video server the recorded footage is able to be stored on either the SD card on board the camera or externally on a Network Video Recorder or cloud storage.

Cloud storage is made possible to most off site network storage service that allows mounting as a hard drive on your computer. There are no subscription fees for this device.

Beware: Off site storage will use your internet upload, and fees might also be applicable for such storage.

Accessories.

As an alternative to storing your video footage on your PC or limiting SD card, you could use a NVR or multi channel video recorder like the 4 channel Qnap Network Video Recorder (VS-2104-PRO+-US)

A wireless range extending antenna is also available for the Foscam FI9821W. Mounting becomes a breeze with a universal heavy duty adjustable mount bracket.

Pro’s.

  • Good image quality, even at night.
  • Strong Wi-Fi signal and ‘N’ capable for high speed.
  • A wide 70 degree viewing angle
  • Pan and Tilt. Not something many competitors have.
  • Many storage options, Sd card, NVR or cloud network.
  • No ongoing fees like some of its comtetitors in this segment.

Con’s.

  • Set up is complicated, not because it is difficult but badly explained in the manuals.
  • Need to set up a new DDNS for the video to be accessible on the internet. ( In it’s defence, a free DDNS is offered)

Foscam FI9821W V2 Pic1Conclusion.

All IP cameras have their own login, detection and set up problems. This one just doesn’t explain very well. If you are able to persevere with the poor installation instructions, this is a very good camera. The capabilities for this camera, at this price point is nothing short of incredible. There are many low scoring reviews on the internet from owners who found it too difficult to make operate. Once operational most have given a good operational review.

This is a good indoor camera with good monitoring software and many storage possibilities. At less than $100 with pan and tilt, this is good value.
